The family name 'Alengaden' derived from 'Alangad', name of a village near Aluva,in Ernakulam district., Kerala. The family was called 'Alengaden family' after its settlement in Irinjalakuda, a town in Trichur District. This took place in 16th century. There are different opinions and stories which were handed down by the elders of the family to generations at different times for the settlement of the family in Irinjalakuda. One of the stories which were handed down was this: During the invasion of Tipu Sultan from Mysore his military had camped in Alangad. Many local Christians and Hindus had fled from the village to save themselves from the military of Tipu Sultan. Our family ancestors were among those who left their home ,land and property. Another version of the story was that Shaktan Tampuran, the then ruler of Kochi brought many Christian families to do trade in different parts of his kingdom. The third belief refers to a revolutionary background of the family. The family originally belonged to a rich Brahmin family(Notath) of Alangad. One of the young male members of the family fell in love with a Christian young woman who was working in this Brahmin family. When it was known that the woman was pregnant the young Brahmin was asked by the members of the family to abandon her and get married to a Brahmin woman. In those days this was only a common practice. But the young Brahmin refused to abandon the woman on the principle of justice . He opted to abandon his rich family with all rights to property and arrived in Irnjalakuda with his Christian partner. He became a Christian. The family increased and multiplied in Irinjalakuda. To this day the Alengaden family plays a significant role in the social and church life of Irinjalkuda. In later years a few members of Alengaden family migrated to different parts of Kerala. Our grand father Devassy was known for his fearless life style. He had a straight forward approach to issues conerning truth and justice. He never compromised his self respect and dignity at any time . After his death in Irnjalakuda our grand mother went to Kallur with her children where she had a large number of relatives belonging to Vattakuzhy family. Though she expected support from her family it did not realize. Through hard work she brought up her three children.
